Mighty Microbes: Bacteria Move Heavy Objects  Apr 20, 2008
The team of researchers, including Magdalene "Maggie" So, a member of the BIO5 Institute and the department of immunobiology in the UA College of Medicine, studied Type IV pili -- or filaments -- on the surface of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacterium that causes the infectious disease gonorrhea. The research results help them understand the role that Type IV pili play in initiating a variety of infectious diseases -- including tuberculosis -- and how retracting pili allow bacteria to crawl and... Urinary Tract Infections  Feb 17, 2008
Urethritis is often accompanied by burning with urination (dysuria) and urethral discharge, especially when it involves sexually transmitted diseases caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Trichomonas vaginalis. Cystitis, or inflammation of the urinary bladder, manifests itself as urinary frequency and urgency. (Suite101.com)

Species Status of Neisseria gonorrhoeae: Evolutionary and Epidemiological Inferences from MLSTJulia S Bennett , Keith A Jolley , Frederick Sparling , Nigel J Saunders , Anthony Hart , Ian M Feavers and Martin CJ Maiden ... Various typing methods have been developed for Neisseria gonorrhoeae, but none provide the combination of discrimination, reproducibility, portability, and genetic inference that allows the analysis of all aspects of the epidemiology of this pathogen from a single data set. HPV Vaccine Does Not Appear To Be Effective For Treating Pre-existing HPV Infection  Aug 16, 2007
Similarly, no evidence of vaccine effects was observed in analyses stratified by other study entry parameters thought to potentially influence clearance rates and efficacy of the vaccine, including time since sexual initiation, oral contraceptive use, cigarette smoking, and concomitant infection with Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhoeae. "These findings have important clinical implications. For example, in countries where HPV DNA testing is incorporated in cervical cancer screening and... (Science Daily)

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease  May 19, 2007
The two most common organisms associated with PID are Chlamydia trachomatis (chlamydia) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonorrhea) introduced into the genital tract during sexual intercourse. However, organisms that commonly reside in the lower genital tract can also cause pelvic inflammatory disease. (Suite101.com)

The new data, from CDC s Gonococcal Isolate Surveillance Project (GISP) in 26 U.S. cities, showed that among heterosexual men, the proportion of gonorrhea cases that were fluoroquinolone-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae (QRNG) reached 6 ... CDC is urging health departments to maintain or develop capacity to perform cultures for Neisseria gonorrhoeae and to assess any gonorrhea treatment failures for possible resistance. (Science Daily)

Gonorrhea: What you need to know  Apr 16, 2007
Gonorrhea is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a bacterium that can grow and multiply easily in the warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract, including the cervix (opening to the womb), uterus (womb), and fallopian tubes (egg canals) in women, and in the urethra (urine canal) in women and men. The bacterium can also grow in the mouth, throat, eyes, and anus. (Food Consumer)
