Seroprevalence of HHV-8, CMV, and EBV among the general population in Ghana, West Africa  Aug 18, 2008
The results presented herein indicate that HHV-8, CMV and EBV infections are hyperendemic in both HIV-seronegative and HIV-seropositive Ghanaians, and suggest primarily a horizontal route of transmission of these three viral infections in Ghana. The complete article is available as a. (BioMed Central)

Antiviral Therapy Helps Children At Risk For Post-transplant Lymphoproliferative Disease  Aug 5, 2008
Still, they concluded, "Valganciclovir has been shown safe in the current study and the population of children treated did not develop PTLD, warranting future trials to confirm a positive effect in the management of EBV infection.". In an accompanying editorial, Michael Green and George Mazariegos of the University of Pittsburgh, discuss their experience lowering immune suppression for patients with persistently high EBV loads, instead of using antiviral therapy. Vaccine Shows Promise In Preventing Mono  Dec 12, 2007
Despite the frequency of EBV infections and infectious mononucleosis, the new study is the first to suggest the efficacy of a vaccine in preventing infectious mononucleosis ... During the 18-month observation period, the proportion of symptomatic EBV infections was reduced from 10 percent (nine out of 91) in the control group to 2 percent (two out of 90) in the vaccinated group, indicating that those who did not receive the vaccine were almost 5 times more likely to develop infectious... Expression of P2 receptors in human B cells and Epstein-Barr virus-transformed lymphoblastoid cell lines  Sep 14, 2006
BMC Immunology 2006, 7:22 doi:10. Abstract (provisional). (BioMed Central)

Sex May Increase Risk of Mono Virus  Aug 5, 2006
In developed countries, however, EBV infection often doesn't occur until adolescence or young adulthood, when it's more likely to cause symptomatic illness, mono -- a condition marked by fever, fatigue, sore throat and swollen lymph nodes. According to Crawford's team, the new findings suggest that sexually active teens and adults may be exposed to a larger dose of EBV through particularly "deep" kissing, or possibly through genital fluids, which can carry the virus. Analysis of 10,000 ESTs from lymphocytes of the cynomolgus monkey to improve our understanding of its immune system  Apr 18, 2006
The identification of multiple genes involved in the immune response, their sequence variations to the human homologues, and their responses to EBV infection could provide useful information to improve our understanding of the cynomolgus monkey immune system. 1999-2006 BioMed Central Ltd unless otherwise stated. Waking A Sleeping Virus: Taking Aim At One Of Mankind's Most Common Diseases  Feb 21, 2006
"We have been trying to develop an effective way to treat EBV infections for over 20 years, without major successes," Morand says. "Thanks to this partnership between medical research and structural biology that has grown on the Grenoble Polygone Scientifique campus, we are closer than ever before.". (Science Daily)

Tips from the Journals of the American Society for Microbiology  Jan 20, 2006
"Consequently, even if a small number of breast cancer cells are EBV infected, the impact of EBV infection on the efficiency of anticancer treatment might be of importance," say the researchers ... Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) genome and expression in breast cancer tissue: effect of EBV infection of breast cancer cells on resistance to paclitaxel (Taxol). (EurekAlert!)

'Mono' Virus May Shorten Pregnancy Duration  Jan 1, 2006
A first instance of EBV infection was seen in 1 ... "Our findings need to be verified by others," Eskild said, adding: "There is insufficient knowledge about the consequences of maternal EBV infection in pregnancy to make any clinical recommendations and guidelines.". (MEDLINEplus)
