Protein key to neuro-regeneration May 21, 2008
By identifying this transcription factor, the research team believes that there is scope to produce eventual cures for damage and diseases of the peripheral nervous system, such as the inherited condition Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and the autoimmune disorder Guillain-Barre disease. Unlike the peripheral nervous system, the central nervous system does not regenerate when damaged. (EurekAlert!)

New Motor System Impairment Diagnosing Tool Developed Jan 16, 2008
The DIMETER system makes it easier for doctors and other health professionals to objectively evaluate the tremors exhibited in the hands and fingers of patients affected by some disorders that impair their motor skills, such as Parkinson, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. To make such measurements, DIMETER uses an electromechanical apparatus that is controlled by the hand or finger of the affected patient and registers the movement and the forces that are generated. Excess alcohol consumption can bring it on, as can some vitamin deficiencies, cancer treatments, and dozens of inherited disorders, most notably Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. "These patients are often dismissed, and many really suffer," said Herrmann. (Science Daily)
Mutant sperm guide clinicians to new diseases Dec 3, 2007
" The team looked at regions known to be affected by rearrangement in Williams-Beuren Syndrome, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease Type 1A, Smith-Magenis Syndrome, and a deletion (AZFa) that causes male infertility. Their study showed that duplications are about half as frequent as deletions. By contrast, the two types of CNV are similarly common in healthy adults, suggesting that some deletions are too detrimental for the genome to tolerate. "It is likely that deletions are more harmful than... (EurekAlert!)

Defective movement of cell's power plants implicated in commom inherited neurological disorder Jan 17, 2007
WASHINGTON, DC, January 16, 2007 Contrary to previous thinking, the inefficient movement of cell's "power plants" - the mitochondria - within a cell, rather than their low energy production, may be a contributing factor in the development of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), new research shows. The study, published in the January 10 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience, is the first to show that mutations in the gene Mitofusin 2 (MFN2), known to cause a form of CMT, also disrupt the...
