    As we grow as a community, it is vital that when we design our streets and public spaces we place a priority on pedestrian and bicycle safety and provide benches, broad sidewalks, bicycle paths, parks and other meeting places that promote a strong sense of neighborhood and community. For this reason, I strongly advocate that we consider alternatives to the five-lane thoroughfare being proposed for Russell Street. (Missoulian, MT)

STORY SO FAR: The city s Bicycle trian Advisory Commission, after discussing a range of options since November, opted to replace bike lanes on N.W. 10th Street between Buchanan and Harrison Avenues with sharrows, pavement decals shaped like arrows that remind motorists to share the road.     A movement that began roughly 10 years ago, the task force has consistently advocated for improved bicycle safety, pushed for bike racks at the Newton North High School site and collaborated with the city on bike- and pedestrian-conscious planning.     Children participating in the Bicycle Safety Program received a bicycle helmet and helmet fitting from the Loma Linda Safe Kids Coalition. The Big Bear Municipal Water District presented a water safety program and demonstrated life jacket usage, and the United States Forest Service provided information on forest care and use, and wildfire prevention.
