    Risk of cancer from X-rays 'not negligible'  Jul 6, 2006
    Tens of thousands more will have an angioplasty or other X-ray-guided procedure to prop open clogged coronary arteries, shrink uterine fibroids and diagnose and other illnesses. "In general, these procedures are of benefit to Canadians since they allow a shorter stay in hospital and reduce the need for surgery. However, the risks of cancer and deterministic effects [injuries] are not negligible," according to the Health Canada document, obtained by Ottawa researcher Ken Rubin. (Canada.com)

    Protein Polymer Technologies, a San Diego-based company that specializes in protein design and synthesis, said that it has filed an application with the Food and Drug Administration to expand the labeled indications of Surgica's embolization products to include treatment of hypervascular tumors including uterine fibroids, liver and renal tumors.     Focused Ultrasound Effective Against Fibroids  Feb 11, 2006
    "This is the first large study using MR-guided focused ultrasound surgery for uterine fibroids and demonstrates successful symptom reduction at 6 and 12 months with a low rate of adverse events," lead investigator Dr. Elizabeth A. Stewart told Reuters Health. Stewart, of Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston and colleagues note in the medical journal Fertility and Sterility that fibroids lead to more than a third of hysterectomies. (MEDLINEplus)
